The Rape of Northern Waters

Published February 21, 1969

Description: Representative Jerome Waldie warns against the perceived negative effects on the San Francisco Bay-Delta estuary by the California's State Water Project in this speech at the Commonwealth Club. According to Waldie, the State Water Resources Control Board, without oversight, chose to ignore the advice of its own scientists and began plans for a peripheral canal to divert water to other parts of the state. Waldie cites reports by Department of Fish and Game biologists indicating that a "drastic and intolerable reduction" in the striped bass fishery would result were purposely excluded from the task report of the Bay-Delta study. A counter argument, "California's Water Problems: Perspectives and Prospects," occurred the following week (28 February 1969). Jerome R. Waldie was a member of the California State Assembly from 1959 to 1966 and served as majority leader from 1961 to 1966. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1966 to 1974.
